Catherine McLennan c1820 – 18 September 1905

Catherine McKenzie was born about 1820, believed to be the eldest daughter of Murdock and Ann McKenzie of Plockton, Scotland.

Catherine married John MacLennan on 5 February 1839 in Plockton and they had a family of nine children: Alexander 1840-1900, Allan born 1842 and died young, Kenneth born 1843, Catherine 1845-1923, Donald 1847-1879, twins Flora 1849-1932 and Ann 1849-1923, Christina 1853-1942, and Murdock 1855-1942.

They raised their family in Plockton, but Catherine was widowed on 10 March 1858 when John died. In 1871, with her four daughters and son Murdock, Catherine immigrated to Napier, New Zealand. She left behind her three married sons, Alex, Kenneth and Donald. At this time Plockton was a Gaelic speaking village.

By 1878 Catherine had moved south to Port Chalmers with her daughters. She only spoke Gaellic so always had to have a daughter on hand to help with shopping and so lived near her daughter Ann Johnson. As her health failed she moved to Dunedin where she died on 18 September 1905. She was buried in her daughter Christina’s family plot.
