Coll Turner was born in Scotland c. 1844. By 1869 he was in Dunedin, where he married Margaret Henderson on 31 December. He was a boilermaker by trade, a man of strong physical bearing and equally strong character. Coll and Margaret had six children: Alexander (1873), Flora McKenzie (1878), Allan (1876), James (1880), Coll (1883) and Eva (1886). None of them were long-lived; it is believed they were all victims of tuberculosis, with ages at death ranging from four years (Alexander) to 43 (James). Neither of the daughters married.

Coll himself reached the age of 61 years, dying on 20 July 1905. Margaret survived him by 23 years, dying in 1928 at the age of 78 years. They are buried with several of their children and Margaret’s mother Mary Henderson in the Northern Cemetery.
