Born in London in 1848. Came to New Zealand in 1871, her shipboard diary is in the Hocken Library. Married Thomas Whitson on 2 August 1876 in Dunedin. Their home was a centre for arts, and many people from the theatre, stage and musical circles stayed with them, including Robert Louis Stevenson and Grace Palotta who in 1946 was the last living member of the once famous ‘Gaiety Girls’.
