Jane Mallett (c.1870 – 1904)

Jane Ann Mallett (née Donovan) was born circa 1870 in Victoria, Australia. Her parents were Cornelius and Frances (née Hazley) Donovan. Jane’s father Cornelius was a labourer. She emigrated to New Zealand with her parents when she was two years old.

Jane married William Vardon Mallett in Dunedin when she was 31 years old.

Jane Mallett died suddenly on July 9th 1904 at her residence, 205 Great King Street, Dunedin at the age of 34 years. The causes of her death listed on her death certificate were cardiac syncope and internal haemorrhage of half an hour’s duration. She had lived 32 years in New Zealand at the time of her death. Jane is buried here in the Northern Cemetery with other members of her family. Although her death certificate states that Jane had no living children, there is a stillborn baby Mallett who was born on 19th January 1902 and buried in another gravesite (Block 70, Plot 10) who could have been her child. Her husband William returned to Australia some time after Jane’s death and remarried in 1908.
