THIS STONE N.B. Trooper Peter Nelson’s surname is seemingly spelt incorrectly as ‘Neilson’ on the monumental inscription. |
Peter Nelson was a Trooper who served in the Boer War. He came from Bluff, Southland, where he was employed as a labourer. He embarked with the New Zealand Mounted Rifles, Fifth Contingent, in March 1900 and served in the Transvaal receiving the Imperial South African War Medal. He came home on the Tagus arriving July 1901 and returned to Southland. He had suffered disease and ill health in Africa that continued at home and on a visit to Dunedin in search of a remedy he collapsed and was taken to Dunedin Hospital, where he died of acute meningitis on 1st October 1901. He was aged 23 years and is buried here alone. |
