IN MEMORIAM PROMOTED On plaque:- LOUIS J. McKECHNIE |
Louis McKechnie was a Trooper who served in the Boer War. He was a Southlander brought up on Benmore Station which his father managed, and was the captain of his school football and cricket teams and was later employed as a clerk. The family moved to Hawke Bay and Louis joined the Fifth Contingent Reserves there, leaving New Zealand with them in March 1900. Louis returned on the Tagus picking up enteric fever on the trip home. He was sent to Dunedin Hospital on arrival. His parents came from Hawke Bay to nurse him and stayed with him until he died from the disease on the 23rd July. He was aged 24 years and is buried here alone. |
