Elizabeth Evans was born on 15 November 1880 in Lawrence, Otago. Her parents were William and Margaret Evans (Burial Register Nos. 9696 and 14223). Elizabeth started school in Lawrence in 1887. She appears to have spent some time on the family farm in Southland and visiting an uncle and aunt in Townsville, Queensland, but returned to Lawrence school in 1890. Later the same year she moved with her family to Dunedin.
