Henry Lindo Ferguson (1858-1948) Henry Lindo Ferguson, or ‘Lindo’, was a pioneer ophthalmologist in New Zealand. He was born in London on 7 April 1858, the son of Louisa Ann Du Bois and William Ferguson. The family moved to Dublin in 1866 and Lindo entered the Royal College of Science for Ireland in 1873 and then Trinity College. In 1880 he qualified in medicine and then trained in ophthalmology. In the same year he emigrated to Dunedin, New Zealand. He became the ophthalmologist for the Dunedin hospital in 1884, marrying Mary Emmeline Butterworth in the same year. In 1886 Lindo became a lecturer in diseases of the eye at the University of Otago and was made professor of ophthalmology in 1909. He was made dean of the Faculty of Medicine in 1914. He was president of the New Zealand Medical Association in 1896 and the New Zealand Branch of the British Medical Association in 1920. In 1918 he was appointed a CMG; he was knighted in 1924 and made a commander of the Order of St John in 1937. Lindo retired in 1935 and died in Dunedin on 22 January 1948. — See: Wright-St Clair, Rex. ‘Ferguson, Henry Lindo 1858 – 1948’.
