John Yates (1825 – 1893)

John, the third son of William and Ann Unsworth/Yates was born in 1825. He was christened at Saint Peter’s, Bolton le Moors, Lancashire, England on the 26th June 1825.

John went to Tasmania with his mother and sister after the death of his father William. He married Mary Ann Knowles on the 2nd of February 1863 in Hobart. He was a Pavoir and she a Widow. The witnesses were F.W. Patson and Geo. Cooper and the ceremony took place at St David’s Cathedral in Hobart. Both John and Mary made their mark with an X.

Along with his mother, Ann Unsworth/Yates, in about 1863 John Yates and family came to Dunedin, about the same time as his sister Ann and her husband John Gollar. John and Mary Ann Knowles/Yates had three children, William, Esther and David. John is recorded as a Stonemason in his Estate and owned property at Section 20, Block 22, Dunedin, which was sold to Henry Bills. His last known address before his death was at 21 Frederick Street Dunedin. Mary Ann’s last known address was 14 Maybank Street, Opoho, Dunedin (her daughter’s residence).

John died on April 21st 1893 at the age of 69 years and was buried on April 23rd 1893. The certificate states that John died of Influenza, 18 months and chronic gastritis, 3 months.
