Andrew Watson McLean was born in 1853 in Busby, Renfrewshire, Scotland to Alexander and Margaret McLean (nee Watson). His father Alexander was an engine driver in Scotland.

Andrew arrived in New Zealand in 1878 aboard the “Jasper”. He married Elizabeth Connell Cummock on on 28th July 1882 in Dunedin. They had six children, Jane, Alexander, John, Charles, Pearl and Ruby. The first two children passed away aged seven weeks and four years respectively. Andrew resided around the Maitland Street area of Dunedin, where he worked as a carpenter.

Andrew’s last known address was 67 Maitland Street, Dunedin. He died on 25th June 1932.
