John Fergusson was born about 1853 in Dumfriesshire in Scotland. He was married to Mary (née Bruce) who was born in Sutherlandshire in 1855. They emigrated to Dunedin, New Zealand and he worked as a butcher for 45 years.

They had two sons, Bruce and William (John) Fergusson, who was born in Palmerston (South) in August 1884, and two daughters, Jane and Euphemia. William went on to have 9 children, and was always known as John.

John died on 7th June 1932 and is buried with his wife.
