In Memory Of John Finlayson Gillies, Constance Harriet Copland also William Henning Mansford and his wife Caroline Mansford John F. Gillies M.D. [Monument is a marble cross] |
William Henning Mansford (1820-1890) Mansford was from Bath in England. He qualified as a civil engineer and surveyor and had experience working for the English railways before he emigrated to New Zealand in the ‘Victory’. He settled in at Port Chalmers and purchased a block of land which was then called ‘Mansford Town’ but which is better known today as Carey’s Bay. It was from here that he successfully operated a bonded store and built the first jetty in the area. This venture was followed by an importing business which he ran from Stafford Street in Dunedin City, followed by a store in Gabriel’s Gully during the gold rush and later in Milton. William Mansford was Registrar of Otago University between 1874 and 1890. His wife Caroline was later interred with him. [For more information see ‘The Otago University Review’, 1890, pp89-90 |
