Emma Josephine Campbell née Hawden (c.1843-1890)

Emma was born in Banyule, near Heidelberg in Victoria, Australia. She was the eldest daughter of Joseph Hawden a name intimately connected with early Australian exploration.

Emma married Robert Campbell in Christchurch in December 1868. They resided for most of their lives in the mansion built for them on Otekaieke Station in the Waitaki Valley. Emma and Robert enjoyed entertaining and were noted for their hospitality. They had no children.

Emma died on April 17 1890 at the Criterion Hotel from an attack of pleurisy and jaundice, one year after the death of her husband Robert in 1889. The funeral conducted by Bishop Nevill was well attended and included such notable persons as Mr Justice Williams, Dr Hocken, Messrs Haggitt, and Mr J. Roberts amongst others. Emma was interred in the same grave as her husband in the Northern Cemetery. A number of bequests were left by the deceased at her death. Among these, 5000 pounds was bequeathed to the Dunedin Hospital Trustees for the purpose of providing extra comforts for patients, and 6000 pounds for the purpose of erecting a church and parsonage in the Waitaki Valley in a suitable site between Kurow and Duntroon.
