Duncan Bell was born on 11 December 1831 at Campbeltown, Argyll, Scotland. He married Jane Matheson on 27 December 1855 at her birthplace Killean/Kilchenzie, Argyll, Scotland. They had five children before leaving Scotland for New Zealand in 1865. The family arrived in Dunedin on 1 October of that year, and soon afterwards another girl was born. Jane later had twin boys and a sixth daughter. Duncan had been a weaver, but, unable to find work in his trade, he became a shepherd on the station of Mr George Bruce on the Maniatoto Plains. After five years, Duncan brought his family back to Dunedin so that the children could be educated and the older ones could learn trades. Duncan Bell died aged 58 years on 16 May 1888 after being bedridden for eight months with an inflammation of the lungs. His daughter Mary died not long after. Jane outlived her husband by many years, to die on 1 December 1914 at the age of 82. Also buried here: Duncan’s wife Jane. |
