Late in the evening of Christmas Day 1842, near Corsley Heath in Wiltshire, Philip and Elizabeth Pope’s child Richard was born. While he was still quite young the family moved across the border into Somerset and settled in Frome. Richard married Rhoda Wilcox in 1865. They had four children: Florence Louisa, Alice Mary, George Thomas, and Harry. Not long before the family left England for New Zealand in 1875, another son was born. Sadly, the six-month-old Alfred James died aboard the Waimate on the voyage to Otago.

Richard and Rhoda were pioneer members of the Ravensbourne Primitive Methodist Church, Richard helping to build the new church. With Mr W. King, he was responsible for the brickwork, making the bricks on the site.

In May 1885, Richard suffered severe head injuries at a building site in Dunedin and died in hospital a few days later.
