Jane Marr née Malcolm (1811 – 1884) Jane Malcolm was born about 1811 in Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. She married John Marr, who was a Bank Agent, in Scotland. “Granny Marr”, as she was known, arrived in Otago aboard the Bella Vista on 29th October 1863 with her grandchildren, Margaret Jane Smith and John Smith. Burial records state that Jane Marr died on 7th May 1884 aged 73 years, a widow, resident of George Street, Dunedin. She was born in Glasgow and lived 21 years in New Zealand. It is stated that she last came from Scotland. She was buried on 10th May 1884, in Block 94, Plot 17 in the Northern Cemetery, Dunedin, in an unmarked grave beside her grand-daughter Margaret Jane Smith. It still seems strange that this grandmother would travel so far with her grandchildren. Did she have other relatives already in Dunedin? Jane Marr’s Death Certificate states that: she was a Relict of the late John Marr, she died of Chronic Bronchitis at the age of 73, and her doctor was I. Gillies, her Father’s surname was Malcolm, and that she had been in New Zealand for 21 years. See also: |
