James Godso was born 17 July 1826 in Birmingham, England. On 4 August 1850 he was married to Martha Wigget(or Wiggit) who was born 1 October 1823 in Mosley By, England.

James and Martha left Birmingham about 1856 or 1857 for Australia in the “City of Hobart” with three daughters Jean, Ellen( Nellie) and Alma and they settled in Melbourne where James was either a goldminer or working in the goldfields as a builder. While they were there and living in the suburb Carlton they had a son whom they called James Carlton Godso.

The family left Melbourne on the “Omeo” and arrived in Dunedin in 1862. In Dunedin their youngest daughter, Lizzie, was born. Again it is not known whether James was a goldminer or whether he was building but it is known that he eventually formed a partnership “Anderson and Godso -Builders”

In 1873 he built a family home in Ravensbourne.

Unfortunately, James was accidentally drowned in the Otago Harbour when walking home from work.
