N.B.The following biography relates to Robert Gilkison the son of the Robert Gilkison of this record who is buried here in the Northern Cemetery. Robert Gilkison jnr was cremated and his ashes scattered.

Robert Gilkison (1862-1942)

Mr Gilkison arrived on the ‘Forfarshire’ from Glasgow, Scotland in 1879 with his parents and eight brothers and sisters.

He was articled to Stewart & Denniston, solicitors and admitted to the Bar in 1866. Gilkison eventually took over a practice in Clyde and specialised in cases involving the mining community and in 1892 he married Kathleen Thompson.

In 1893, the Gilkisons moved to Dunedin where Robert became a member of the City Council and Hospital Board, Secretary of the Law Society and several other important positions.

He retired from law in 1920 and wrote several books. Gilkison was survived by his wife and three sons.
