William Scanlan was a son of Ann and James Scanlan, who was a publican, owning the Shamrock and Thistle Hotel in Great King Street, Dunedin.

William Scanlan died at the Hotel, also the residence of the family, on 18th August 1878 aged 15 years. He is buried here in the cemetery with his parents and siblings.
