Ethel Anny (May) Galland née Gollar (1886-1972) Ethel, daughter of William and Charlotte Gollar, was born on the 16th April 1886 in Dunedin. Ethel’s baptism certificate states that she was baptised at St. Joseph’s Cathedral, Dunedin on the 6th June 1886 by Rev. P. Lynch. Her name on the baptism certificate is Ethel Anny Gollar. Her Godmother was Margaret Ann East. Ethel was a most attractive young lady but little is known of her early life. Her Burial Register No. 90952 gives her name as Ethel May Galland. On the 4th of October 1917, Ethel at the age of 31 years (although her Marriage Certificate states 29 years old) was married to Walter (Wally) Galland aged 24 years at Octagon Hall, Dunedin, by a Methodist Minister, Clarence Easton. Witnesses to this marriage were Gladys Gould, a domestic and William Marston, French Polisher of 39 Harrow Street, Dunedin. Ethel died aged 86 years, on the 3rd April 1972 at Central Mission Private Hospital, Dunedin, and was buried on the 6th April 1972 in the Northern Cemetery, Dunedin. Along with her husband she is buried in the same plot as her parents and the brother that she never knew. |
