Marie Hawthorne (nee Willeby, nee Angel) was born in Paris about 1840. She migrated to Dunedin in November 1871 from Britain as the widow Marie Willeby and married Stuart Hawthorne, Rector of Otago Boys’ High School (1869-1874) on 23 March 1872 in Dunedin. She was the mother of three boys. Her first born was Charles Willeby (b. 1865 Paris, d. 15 July 1955, London) who was a musician, composer and critic of some renown in the late 19th/early 20th century. With Hawthorne, she produced Stuart Percy Hawthorne (b. 16 Jan 1873 Dunedin, d. 25 March 1954 Wellington) and Edmund Frank Hawthorne (b. 18 May 1874 Dunedin, d. 6 June 1940, London). Marie Hawthorne was well-educated and was fluent in English, French and German. Before her first marriage, she had been governess to the Duchess of York (later Queen Mary). Marie Hawthorne died at Ealing, London on 7 May 1927. She was originally buried there but in 1950, her remains were transferred to Dunedin where they were re-interred in the Northern Cemetery next to her late husband Stuart Hawthorne on 16 March 1950, presumably by her second son Stuart Percy, at that time resident in Wellington.
