Mrs Octavia Yulu Gillies arrived in New Zealand in the ship “Auckland” in 1879. She was a child of 12 years old in a family of eight children that came from Kent in England.

Upon their arrival the entire family was quarantined at Port Chalmers for a fortnight because the baby had measles.

Her future husband was also on the ship. She married him later after the continuing correspondence of the families and spent much of her time in Brown Street in Dunedin.
