Mary Ann Hudson (née Riley) was born on 28 April 1849 at 42 Grays Inn Lane, Holborn St Andrew, London, England. She was the daughter of James Riley, a glass silverer (he made mirrors). Her mother was born Ann Sophia Durant, and James Riley was her second husband. Mary Ann had two siblings from her mother’s first marriage (1829) to James Curline, and two sisters from the later marriage (1847) to James Riley.

She arrived in Lyttelton, New Zealand with her half-sister Ann Curline on the Blue Jacket on 14 October 1866. In 1868 she married Richard Hudson (then known as Daniel Bullock) in Christchurch and they arrived in Dunedin in June of that year. She and Richard had six sons and two daughters. Mary Ann died at her home at 22 Royal Terrace, Dunedin on 2 January 1937.
