Rhoda was born to Sarah and William Wilcox at Beckington, Somerset, in September 1844. The family later moved to Frome and Rhoda worked in the woollen industry.

Two weeks before her twenty-first birthday, Rhoda married Richard Pope in Frome. They had five children, the youngest dying on board ship during the voyage to New Zealand in 1875. With her husband, Rhoda was a pioneer member of the Primitive Methodist Church at Ravensbourne.

In May 1885, Richard suffered severe head injuries at a building site in Dunedin and died in hospital a few days later. Rhoda remained living in the district after her husband’s fatal accident, and died, aged 89, at her home in Montague Street.
