Annie Rebecca Thompson was born in Jersey, Channel islands. She had 3 marriages. Her first husband was Thomas Best, who died in Dunedin Hospital as the result of an accident.

In 1880 she married Bastings and together they owned and ran several hotels in and around Dunedin

After Bastings died she married Thompson who owned a printing and stationers business which was later purchased by the Otago daily Times.
