John Buchan (1858-1926) John, known as ‘Jack’, was born in St Combs in 1858. He married Jessie Buchan (born 1860). The marriage certificate names Jack’s father as Arthur Buchan, a fisherman, and his mother as Christian (née Buchan). When he was about eighteen, Jack had a year at sea and was reputed to have been on the crew of Nansen’s ship on one of his explorations of the polar region. There is a photo of him wearing a Russian-style hat, taken at Reykjavik in Iceland. After this he worked as a fisherman, and, until he married, he fished with his family members out of St Combs. In the late 1880s Jack decided to go into business, aided by his wife who provided £20 made from renting rooms. Unfortunately the business failed due to a recession in the fishing industry. This could have been a factor in the decision to emigrate to New Zealand in 1893 with a large party of Buchan relatives. Charles, his son, recalled ‘Jessie never ceased to remind [my] father of the loss of their savings’. On arrival in Dunedin, Jack and his family settled in Carey’s Bay, a settlement about a mile from Port Chalmers. He made a living by fishing with his brother-in-law Alexander and father-in-law Dade. However, when Alexander died two years after coming to New Zealand, Jack and his family moved to Dunedin. Their first home was a cottage near the Leith where Billy was born in 1896. By 1899 Alexander (Sandy) was born and in 1903 Jack became the proprietor of a fish shop at 249 Great King Street. By 1909 the family had moved to 28 St Andrews Street. Jack died in 1926. Three of Jack’s sons were casualties of the First World War. Arthur and William were killed in the Battle of Passchendaele (1917), and Charles was wounded on the Somme (1918). — Source: From Peterhead to Passchendaele by Roy Buchan. — Other burials recorded at the same site: |
