Joshua Dawson was born in September 1848 at Tow Law, in County Durham, England. His parents were Martin and Sarah Dawson. Joshua was living at Evenwood when he married Isabella Richardson née Gibson, a widow, at the Register Office at Auckland, County Durham, in February 1876. Joshua and Isabella had children, Frances, Martin and Elizabeth, born in County Durham. The family, accompanied by children from Isabella’s first marriage, sailed for New Zealand aboard the ship Wellington, arriving at Port Chalmers in March 1883. Later two more daughters, Mary Ann and Esther, were born. The family settled at Ravensbourne, where Joshua, who liked to be called "Joseph", was a very keen supporter of the local Primitive Methodist Church.
