Charles Fraser, the son of Donald Fraser and Harriet Clark, was born at Tynallan, Strathnairn, in the parish of Daviot and Dunlichty, Inverness-shire, and was baptised on 16 December 1850. He came to New Zealand with his parents and siblings on the Robert Henderson, which arrived at Bluff on 4 September 1862. Charles joined the Otago Daily Times in 1869 and became sub-editor in 1885. For 22 years he held this position, and was twice acting editor, until 1907, when he became editor of the Otago Witness. Charles married Mary Ann McCarthy, the daughter of Michael McCarthy and Julia Scully, at the home of Joseph Walsam, Moray Place, Dunedin, on 27 January 1874. Their children were Donald, James, John, Charles, Harriet, Marian, Catherine (died as an infant), Violet and Ethel. Charles died on 17 February 1924 at 18 Queen’s Drive, Musselburgh, Dunedin, and is buried in the Northern Cemetery with his wife, his daughter Catherine, and the still-born child of his daughter Harriet and her husband Herbert Beer. — Other burials recorded at this site: |
