George Menzies c.1841-1919

George Menzies was the great Grandson of Thomas Menzies and Janet,nee Lockie, Menzies. The couple had seven children the eldest being Thomas who was born in 1762. Thomas married Mary McLean and they had nine children one of whom was James born in 1807. James married Marth Weir and between 1826 and 1869 they had several children, two of their sons came to New Zealand William, also buried here in 192a/8 and George.

George Menzies was born in Leadhills, Lanarkshire, Scotland on 20th August 1841. He was trained as a teacher and followed his brother William to New Zealand on board the ‘William Davie’ which left Glasgow in April 1872 arriving in Port Chalmers on 4th July of that year. He taught at various places during his teaching career in New Zealand, Dunedin, Milton and Invercargill being among them.

George married Grace Turnbull, daughter of James and Mary, nee Cross,Turnbull at Saint Paul’s Manse, Invercargill, Southland, New Zealand on the 8th January 1885 and the couple had six children. Three of George’s sons fought in the Great War 1914-1918, two were wounded and one was killed. George died on the 16th of January 1919 and is buried here in the northern Cemetery with his brother William and his wife Grace and probably his infant son William.
