William James Gollar (Twin) (1858 – 1916)

William James Gollar was born on the 11th March 1858 in Hobart Town, Tasmania, Australia.
William and John (John died on the 25th September 1858) were baptised on the 23rd May 1858 at St Joseph’s Church, Hobart. Little is known of the early life of William, a very distinguished-looking man, except that he was a cricketer. He also became a baker, following in his father’s footsteps, and taught the baking trade to his nephew John Peter Smith. William is also listed in the NZ Cricket Archives as having played for Otago at the age of 33. William had an interest in racehorses and owned several. He also bred deerhound dogs. Bishop Moran married William Gollar and Charlotte Pearce in the old St Joseph’s Church on the 31st May 1882. Witnesses to the marriage were Ronald Montgomery, a Dunedin barman, and Eliza Pearce, Charlotte’s sister.

Others buried here: William’s wife Charlotte, his children William Ernest and Ethel, and his son-in-law Walter Galland.
