Janet was the daughter of Sinclair and Elizabeth (Bain) Mackay; she was born in 1847 in Lyth, Caithness, Scotland. Janet married David Munro at the Free Church Manse, Wick, Caithness, Scotland on 22nd June 1866 when she was in her late teens, 19. In 1875 they arrived in Dunedin aboard the Invercargill with five of their children; Robert, Sinclair, Elizabeth, Christina and Catherine. They lived in many houses around the North End of Dunedin. Janet and David’s final home was 26a Opoho Road, opposite the Botanic Garden and probably near where the entrance to Knox College is now; of course the house is long gone. Janet and David both passed away in 1913, he in June, she in September, at this address. They are buried together here in the cemetery in Block 12, Plot 54, with five other family members. |
