David Munro was born on 9th August 1841 in Wick, Caithness, Scotland, the son of Robert Munro and Christina Sutherland. David married Janet Mackay at the Free Church Manse, Wick, Caithness, Scotland on 22nd June 1886 when he was 25 years old. Before they emigrated, he worked as a farm servant on a property on the road to John O’Groats. In 1875 David and Janet arrived in Dunedin aboard the Invercargill with five of their children; Robert, Sinclair, Elizabeth, Christina and Catherine. David’s first job in Otago was as a ploughman at West Taieri, probably near Outram. Later he became a carter, or what we would call a carrier. They lived in many houses around the North End of Dunedin. David and Janet’s final home was 26a Opoho Road, opposite the Botanic Garden and probably near where the entrance to Knox College is now; of course the house is long gone. David and Janet both passed away in 1913, he in June, she in September, at this address. They are buried together here in the cemetery in Block 12, Plot 54, with five other family members. |
