Stephen was born at "The Rocks", Port Chalmers, in 1855. His parents, Richard and Elizabeth Lean, were farmers, and he was their fourth son. Stephen and Margaret Carr McCulloch were married at Dunedin on 1 April 1879. They had three children: Christine Elizabeth Malcolm Lean, Herbert Spencer Lean, and Sydney Rocks Lean. Being the sole surviving son at the time of his father’s death (1906), Stephen was appointed administrator of the estate, together with Donald Reid Junior, a Dunedin solicitor. In an affidavit signed at this time, he is referred to as a restaurateur. Stephen was a pastrycook by profession, and an operator of dining-room and catering businesses in Dunedin, one of which was the Carlton Private Hotel at 36 Dowling Street. His last residential address was 11 Graham Street, Dunedin. He was aged 57 when he died, on 28 March 1912, survived by his wife and three children. He is interred with his father Richard in Block 193A Plot 30. Others buried here: Stephen’s father Richard. |
