Jessie Buchan (1860-1910)

Jessie Buchan, the daughter of Charles (‘Dade’) and Janet Buchan, was born in 1860 at Peterhead, Scotland. Her maiden name was the same as her married name; there were eighteen other families in the same Peterhead street with the surname ‘Buchan’.

In 1893 Jessie sailed on the Rimutaka with a party of sixteen family members from Peterhead, Scotland to Wellington, New Zealand, where they boarded the Flora, which carried them on to Dunedin. The family settled in Carey’s Bay and then in Dunedin.

Jessie Buchan married John (‘Jack’) Buchan. They had nine children, five of whom were born in Peterhead and sailed with them on the Rimutaka. These were: John (1883), Maggie (1886), Jessie (1888), Charles (1889) and Arthur (1891). In New Zealand they had four more children: Christina (1894), William (1896), Alexander (1899) and Robert (1903). Their daughter Jessie died at the age of twenty in 1908 of meningitis and is buried in the same plot with her mother, who died two years later in 1910.
