Isabella, the child of Benjamin Gibson and Annie Elliot, married Robert Richardson at the age of eighteen. The couple lived in the mining village of Evenwood in Durham County. Robert , who was a miner, was killed in a fall of coal on 8 May 1874 when he was only 35. The widow was assisted for some time by Sir George Elliot, who was said to be a relative; he was a self-made man, having been a pit boy. When Isabella married Joseph Dawson, the family moved to New Zealand where they settled at Ravensbourne, Dunedin. The four children of the first marriage were: William, settled Kaitangata, Mary Jane (Carson), also settled Kaitangata, Bella M. (Yense Christianson), lived Ravensbourne, and Annie M. (Jo Drake), Dunedin. The Dawson children were Fanny and Martin Dawson. — Other burials recorded at the same site: |
