Alexander Scott (1848-1875) Alexander Scott was born in Scotland on September 13th 1848. His relatives principally resided in Geelong, Victoria, Australia. By occupation he was a clerical worker. Arriving in Dunedin he found lodgings at Mrs Paget’s house in Howe Street. He was unemployed for the four months he lived there, and had never married. He was 26 years old at the time of his death, and had been drinking heavily at the time. Tragically Alexander died on December 5th 1875, taking his own life, having been observed acting strangely throughout the day. The jury, at the Coroners direction returned a verdict of suicide, whilst in a state of temporary insanity brought on by drink. (Details from the Otago Witness Dec 11 1875, from Papers Past website.) |
