John Winstanley Wilkin had a long career of 43 years with the Post Office, starting in 1862 as a cadet with the Christchurch Post Office. His father was postmaster at Lyttelton. His brother, J.C. Wilkin, was manager of the Lyttelton Times. He served as Chief Postmaster at Timaru, Invercargill (appointed in 1876), Auckland (appointed in October 1902) then in Dunedin (in 1903, as Auckland’s climate did not agree with him). He served three years as Chief Postmaster in charge of the Dunedin office, where he was much respected. He married Edith Leaf Green and they had a family of eight, three sons and five daughters. John Winstanley Wilkin died of heart failure at 11.30am on Monday 19th November 1906 at his residence in George Street, aged 59, after a long illness which meant he was unable to work at the Post Office from early July 1906.
