Bio contributor:

Joseph Woodcock was a stoker on a train that collided with a horse on the Kaihiku railway bridge on 30th December 1881. He was killed instantly when the engine, tender and seven wagons were derailed and he was crushed under the tender, at the age of 22 years. The Railway Department subsequently paid his widow the equivalent of six months of his pay. Joseph also had a government life insurance for 300 pounds, which was duly paid out.
