Henry Godfrey (1844-1878)

Henry Godfrey was born 27th December 1844, near the Fiddlers, Coopersale Common, Theydon Garnon, Essex, England. Son of William and Louisa née Jessup, he was the eldest son of ten children. In 1861 he was employed as a servant in Essex, in 1865 he married Emma Oliver at Croydon, Surrey and in 1871 he was employed as a house painter and decorator.
They had children, William Henry born 1868, George born 1870 died 1871 and Louisa born 1872.

They emigrated to Dunedin aboard the Corona which departed from Gravesend on November 2nd 1875 and arrived at Port Chalmers on February 5th 1876. Beset by heavy weather, unfavourable winds, and with an outbreak of disease this would prove to be a harrowing voyage resulting in the deaths of 8 passengers.

Settling in Dunedin Emma and Henry had another daughter, Ethel who was born in 1876. Henry who worked as a plumber, and died on 16 June 1878 in Dunedin Public Hospital from TB.
