George Calder 1845–1924

George was born 5 August 1845 in Wick, Caithness, Scotland and came to New Zealand with his family when he was four on the ship Mariner in June 1849. George was the tenth child of David Calder and Jane (née Paterson).

George married Anne (née Clarke) from Malew, Isle of Man on 22 August 1871 in the dwelling house of Mrs Clark, Balclutha.

In 1880 George bought the stone quarry in North-East Valley. By 1905, he was employing 25 men, had a similar number of horses and carts, and two team-driven stone-crushers working in North Rd. The material quarried was used to make roads around Dunedin. He and his brother John also built the stone Presbyterian Church at Caversham, Dunedin.

George Calder was elected to the Roslyn Borough Council in 1903, and was also a member of the Kaikorai School Committee.

His eldest son David wrote a book in 1949 to commemorate the family being here for one hundred years. Other children are: John, George, Janet, Jane and James. Janet died of pertussis, bronchopneumonia and collapsis pulmonis in 1879 when she was thirteen months old. George was also chairman of the North-East Valley School c. 1914, and his house was where the Otago Community Hospice now is.
