Miss I. G. White

One of Dunedin’s well-known singing teachers, Miss Ida Gwendoline White, died recently. She was 89.

Miss White was born in Dunedin in 1887 and attended Otago Girls High School. Her father, Professor David White, was the principal of Dunedin Teachers College.

Miss White set up her own studio in the Octagon, where she taught singing. At the same time she lectured on the history and development of music at the Otago University and the Dunedin Women’s Club.

While on the staff of Columba College, Miss White established the Society of Women Musicians. She became director of music at the college in 1927.

She taught at the school until 1940 and after her retirement still took an interest in students at the University near her home.

At a memorial service at Columba College, one of Miss White’s former pupils, Honor McKellar, spoke of Miss White’s years at the school.
