Keith Ramsay (1844-1906)

Keith Ramsay was born in Alyth, Perthshire, the youngest son of the Rev. William Ramsay. He came to Otago on the ship Jura in 1862 and established a shipping agency in Dunedin in 1865. He was managing owner of the steamer Invercargill from 1885; it ran a regular service from Invercargill to Dunedin.

Ramsay was a member of the Otago Harbour Board from 1874 to 1875 and from 1877 to 1883, and its chairman from 1880 to 1883. He was a Dunedin City Councillor in 1872 and elected mayor in 1874 at the age of thirty; he remains the youngest person to have held this position in the city.

Ramsay was a director of several companies, including the National Insurance Co., Perpetual Trustees Estate and Agency Co., Westport Coal Co., Dunedin Savings Bank and the Dunedin Stock Exchange.

Ramsay married Janet Torry-Douglas in 1871, and they had three sons and six daughters. He died in 1906.
