Mackray Baillie was born in the parish of Kilsyth, in the county of Stirling , in Scotland, on 24 Jan 1824 to Thomas Baillie and Robina Baillie (nee Ralston). Mackray had a wooden leg as a result of injuries in the Crimean war. He was a stonemason and it is understood that he had a stonemason’s yard in Dunedin but this is not certain. He died at Dunedin hospital on 11 September 1895 from heart disease and bronchitis

In his will he left everything to his sister, Mary Baillie (like him, unmarried). She also lived in Dunedin.
