Gowan Lyall Hercus (1882-1912)

Gowan Hercus was born on 22nd January 1882, a son of George and Eliza (née Elder) Hercus. He was educated at Arthur Street Primary School, Otago Boys High School and the School of Mines, Otago University. After graduating he took up a position as Director of the Westport School of Mines, but after a short time died unexpectedly on 11th March 1912, aged 30. Coal dust had affected his health, leading to pleurisy and pneumonia. Gowan is buried here in the cemetery with his parents, his brother Frank, his niece Helen and his nephew Roy.
