George Stephen Butler (c.1861-1944)

George Stephen Butler was born in Melbourne, Australia.

He moved to New Zealand aged 19 and worked as a farm labourer and bushman, first at Signal Hill and later around the Leith Valley. He married Agnes Hardie of North East Valley in 1883 and had five sons and seven daughters.

Butler later purchased forty acres of land in the Upper Leith Valley (then part of Maori Hill Borough) for dairying and contracting. First elected to a seat on the MHBC in 1894, he was Mayor of the borough from 1902-1904, and again from 1913-1914.

Butler Street was named after him in 1906 as was more recently a bridge over the Northern Motorway. George Butler died on 15th June 1944.
