John Campbell Begg (1876-1965)

John was the son of Alexander Campbell Begg and Katharine Clarke. He was educated at Otago Boys High School and Otago University, where he studied physics and philosophy. He farmed in Australia for a period, before farming Wyndham Station with his brother James. In 1905 he married Agnes Garden; they had three sons and one daughter.

He served in World War I in Britain and France and then shifted to Dunedin with his family. He became interested in astronomy, and was largely responsible for establishing the Observatory in Dunedin, donating its first telescope. He travelled widely, giving and publishing papers on his ideas. He died in Dunedin on 8 November 1965.
