5137 Private John Ormsby (Jack*) Sullivan (c.1892 – 1916), 1st Australian Imperial Force.

Late of 16 Lees Street, South Dunedin, Jack enlisted in the AIF in October 1914 at the Broadmeadows Camp, Melbourne.

He enlisted into the 3rd Australian Light Horse Brigade (12th Company, AASC) which departed Melbourne on 2 February 1915.

Jack served at Gallipoli from May 1915 until the evacuation in December 1915.

He was transferred from the disbanded portion of the 3rd ALH Brigade to the 56th Infantry Battalion, AIF to reinforce the Western Front battle front-line in the vicinity of Armentiers from June 1916.

Jack Sullivan was killed in action on 9 October 1916 when a stray artillery shell struck his billet in the village of Fleurbaix on the Somme, France. This also killed one civilian (Jack’s was the only death for the battalion that day).

Jack* – the forename under which Pte Sullivan enlisted, and that which appears on his headstone. He is buried in the Croix du Bac British Military Cemetery, France.
