Robert McKinlay (1860 – 1944)

Robert McKinlay was born in 1860 in Kilmarnock, Scotland and came to New Zealand with his parents on the ship “Auckland” in 1875. He was then aged 15.

Robert McKinlay was a foreman ironmoulder and an upright man

He took a keen interest in the Volunteer movement and joined the Dunedin Navals in 1877 and became a first class petty officer.

He had a love of bowls and cards and held office at the I.O.O.F, the Dunedin Burns Club and the Dunedin Bowling Club

He married Euphemia McMillan Marquis on 7 November 1879 at Leith St in Dunedin.

They had four daughters and two sons, one of whom was the famous New Zealand Tenor of the 1920’s and 1930’s, W. Ernest McKinlay, who died in Sydney in 1945.

Robert himself died at Leith St, Dunedin on 19 April 1944
