John Chettleburgh 1842-1927

John Chettleburgh was born in Norfolk, England in the town of Thorpe in May 1842. He married Annie Dayson/Pearton at St Marks Church, Kennington, Surrey England in 1867. John was employed as a Gardener.

The couple had five children in England, Ellen, John, Evelina, Gertrude and Thomas before emigrating to New Zealand aboard the Adamant in 1875. The Voyage is detailed in the book White Wings.

In Dunedin John was employed as head gardener at ‘Tolcarne’, the home of Richard Oliver M.P. and the family was housed on the property. The house was later owned by the Duncan Family where John continued his employment under the new owners. Six more children were born to the couple in New Zealand, Charles, Rose, Emily, Louisa, Rosa and Florence. John judged gardening competitions in Dunedin. The family later lived in Drivers Road and at 8 Brent St. Maori Hill

John died aged 85 years in 1927. He is buried here with his wife Annie and his two infant daughters Rose and Rosa
