William was known as “Leslie.” He was the youngest son of William Hepburn and Margaret Dunbar Ross Hepburn, née Marshall. Brought up in Dunedin, New Zealand, he attended Kaikorai School from 28 January 1890 until 16 December 1895, when he left to go to high school, probably Otago Boys’ High School. His headstone inscription reads: “Also In Loving Memory of William Leslie Hepburn accidentally killed at [?] Erected by his workmates.” The fatal accident occurred on Saturday 25 March 1916, according to a note written by his sister c. 1916.
